Green oasis of Montenegrin tourism sector

Metropole of Montenegrin tourism sector, Budva, has a green “oasis” in the center of the city, which is an example of climate smart urban planning (CSUD), consistent with sustainable development goals. It is called “Slovenska plaza touristic village”, and has been set as a role model for architectural and civil engineering standards in highly seismic active zones, right after devastating earthquake, that severely damaged Montenegrin coast in 1979.

For more than 40 years, “Slovenska plaza” has been a beautiful green resort, known for its low rise small buildings, that have been in a strong demand by various international tourists even since. Recently, due to the strong expansion of constructions in Budva, and Montenegro in general, there are many investors that world prefer to see high residential and hotel buildings instead of this green resort, clearly due to high profitability of the location. That is why it is important to keep “Slovenska plaza” protected, as future generations of tourists and residents should enjoy this climate resistant resort, close to the beach, but also isolated from the crowds and noice, that is often connected to high season demand.

Current board of directors, as stated in local journal “Vijesti” on August 20th, 2024, promised that “Slovenska plaza village”, which has been state owned from its incorporation in 1984, will keep its current status, and will not be subject of a future privatisation. We will see if this promise will be kept, as it important to keep current CSUD projects protected and enhanced with new similar projects, that are consistent with sustainable tourism, which has been noted as a strategic vision in current Montenegrin tourism strategies. Also, let us be reminded, that Montengro, as a self proclaimed ecological state (from 1991) owns to its population to nurture these projects and build more of such kind in the future.

Impact on Industry:

This article shows that keeping current CSUD projects is very important for the country’s consistent implementation of 17 sustainable development goals, that its government has signed and made it obligatory for current and future governments.

Conclusion:

Slovenska plaza is a sustainable and profitable entity that should be a role model for future smart planning and development of tourism sector in Montenegro.
