CBAM—Application in Bosnia and Herzegovina

On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the University of Bihać successfully organized a promotional event as part of the SmartWB project. The event was held at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Bihać, and focused on the topic “CBAM—Application in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

The professional lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Halid Makić and Assistant Emir Bajramović, who introduced the concept of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and discussed its potential implications for economic entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a particular emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The event gathered participants from relevant ministries, public institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the SME sector, as well as academic staff and students. It provided a valuable platform for discussion and exchange of ideas on the role and challenges of CBAM implementation in the local context.

The organizers expressed their appreciation for the active participation and interest shown by the attendees, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in supporting the country’s alignment with EU climate policies and sustainable development goals.

Discussions during the event highlighted the need for proactive engagement of institutions, businesses, and academia in addressing upcoming challenges related to carbon regulations and green transition. Participants acknowledged the importance of aligning national policies with EU standards in order to facilitate smoother integration into international markets and to enhance environmental responsibility.

Recommendations:

  1. Capacity Building: Organize follow-up workshops and training sessions for SMEs and public institutions to build capacity in CBAM compliance and carbon footprint assessment.
  2. Policy Development: Encourage closer cooperation between governmental bodies and academic institutions in developing strategic frameworks for CBAM implementation.
  3. Awareness Campaigns: Continue public outreach and educational efforts to ensure all relevant stakeholders are informed about the implications of CBAM and the opportunities it presents.
  4. Research and Innovation: Promote research initiatives focused on sustainable production methods, emissions monitoring, and innovation in low-carbon technologies.
  5. Stakeholder Involvement: Establish a multi-sector working group to monitor the development of CBAM regulations and provide guidance to domestic businesses.

These actions will help ensure that Bosnia and Herzegovina is better prepared for the implementation of CBAM and can position its economy to take advantage of emerging green market opportunities.
